A turbocharger spins past 100,000 rpm in constant heat for thousands of hours, and when it lets go the machine loses power immediately. If the bearings fail badly enough the debris goes down the inlet into the engine, and a turbo job becomes an engine job. We supply turbochargers for earthmoving, mining and industrial diesel engines — not automotive units.

Black smoke at the stack, or blue smoke if oil is passing the seals

A whine or siren note rising with the revs

Oil sitting in the inlet piping or intercooler

Shaft play at the compressor wheel, or chipped blades

A turbo very rarely fails on its own. It fails because the air filter was blocked, the oil feed was restricted, or the oil was dirty. Fit a new one without finding out which, and you will be buying another soon enough.

When we supply a turbo we ask what the machine has been doing and what the service history looks like, because that conversation is usually worth more than the discount.
