Differentials and Axle Assemblies for Earthmoving Equipment

Differentials and axles carry everything the machine weighs plus everything it is carrying, and on a dump truck running loaded down a rough haul road that is a punishing life. They give plenty of warning before they fail, and most of it gets ignored.

Signs Your Differentials Need Attention
A whine or howl that changes with road speed is the classic. So is a clunk on take-off or when changing direction, which usually means backlash has opened up somewhere.
Check the oil at service — metal particles here mean the same as they do anywhere else.
Watch for oil leaking from the hub or housing, wheel wobble, the machine pulling to one side under power, and hubs running hot after a haul cycle.
