Final Drives and Travel Motors for Excavators and Dozers

Final drives are the last link in the chain — a planetary gearbox bolted to a hydraulic travel motor, turning the sprocket that moves the machine. Engine, hydraulics and controls can all be perfect, and if the final drive has gone the machine still is not going anywhere.

plus Doosan, Hyundai, JCB, Kobelco, Sany and other makes

The motor is usually a Kawasaki M2X or M5X, or a Nabtesco GM series unit.

Signs Your Final Drives Are Failing

Noise comes first, and it comes from one side.

A whine, a grind or a clunk the operator notices when tramming and not when digging.

Soon after, one track runs slower than the other and the machine starts pulling.

The cheapest early warning is the oil, checked at every service.

Milky oil means the seal has failed and water is in there.

Metal flecks mean the bearings and gears are already grinding themselves down.

Either way you have weeks, not months.

Complete Assembly or Repair

A complete assembly has the machine working in hours rather than days, which is usually the deciding factor. Where the damage is limited to seals or a single gear, individual planetary components and seal kits do the job for a good deal less.
